«Mercy Now», Mary Gauthier A cantora norte-americana Mary Gauthier lançou ano passado seu quinto cd: Between Daylight and Dark, mas aqui regresso ao disco com Mercy Now (4º). Um trabalho dolente de difícil digestão de uma das artistas mais negras que o country viu nascer nos últimos anos. Ou como o alt-country pode ser negro. É a assustadora conclusão, ainda que prematura, com o primeiro tema do álbum («Falling Out of Love»). O encosto possível ao trabalho de Johnny Cash não passa de um mero exercício contextualizador de uma obra cantada e criada a partir de um ponto de vista totalmente diferente: o da mulher. Mary Gauthier canta sobre indivíduos perdidos entre destilarias afunilantes para abismos inescapáveis. Da voz da cantora quase que se pode assinalar os grãos de areia de uma terra que virou alimento. O tema título é capaz de pedir uma clemência dolorosa para depois explicar os porquês através de temas como «Drink», que espoja o semblante da artista em histórias de vícios. Gauthier recupera autores como Harlaw Howard e Fred Eaglesmith na composição de um álbum com muita substância, sapiente do seu campo de acção, de uma artista que se dá ao luxo de editar discos em idade adulta, quando a maturidade está suplantada a cada segundo de «Mercy Now». É evidentemente um disco pesado, em que não nos ocorre de todo uma identificação direta com a escrita da autora. Não por dificuldade ou por defeito da artista, mas sim pelo peso significativo da vida que Gauthier carrega nos membros inferiores, e por consequência, na articulação musical.
