Berkeley Bionics™, designs and manufactures lower extremity exoskeletons to augment human strength and endurance during locomotion. Berkeley Bionics exoskeletons increase wearer's strength while decreasing their metabolic cost of walking. The company is also attacking the technological barriers to a practical, affordable exoskeleton for civilian and medical applications, particularly to assist patients with neurological or muscular mobility disorders. These powered human exoskeletons would allow their wearers to walk upright without the strain and muscular effort required by today's unpowered orthotic devices.

Join CARRIE KEAGAN for another exclusive and uncensored episode of NO GOOD TV's UP CLOSE featuring the cast and director of the movie Berkeley part 1.
Berkeley is the story of Ben Sweet (Nick Roth), an eighteen year old middleclass boy who comes to UC Berkeley in 1968 to study accounting and avoid the draft. There begins an odyssey through sex, drugs, rock and roll, and political activism which turns his conservative world upside down, and leaves him on a path of exploration and self-discovery, far from the life of his father, Sy (Henry Winkler).
Director's Statement
Why did I make this film? Why does anyone make any film? I thought it was relevant, and it was a journey for me to explore why I became who I've become. At eighteen, I was an innocent. I won't say my whole peer group was, but we weren't afraid of so many things... we were curious, hopeful, and as I engaged in the anti-war movement I felt more empowered. I thought I could have it all... make great political films, travel, be an intellectual and part of a socialist revolution.
Like my protagonist, I went to college because it was expected of me. It was an easier choice, because I needed the student deferment to avoid going to Viet Nam. In high school I defended my dad's Republicanism, and within two years I was calling him a "capitalist pig."
After I had dealt with my divorce in JACK THE DOG, and my sisters murder in MANHOOD, I felt I should make a film about my transformation from nice, middleclass Jewish boy to long-haired radical filmmaker; not because I thought myself so remarkable, but because I thought I was so very much a symbol of my generation. At the same time, my son, Nick was entering college and had decided to go to Berkeley and study Philosophy.
It seemed a wonderful idea to collaborate with Nick and revisit a time like no other. Looking back, my choices seemed so arbitrary. I remembered a great deal, but understood very little.
All I knew was I started college as a conservative who would play golf and go into his dad's carpet business, and ended it uncertain, having abandoned golf and exploring the possibility that I might be a poet or a novelist. I still have my doubts, but thirty-five years later I remain grateful for every young man and woman who crossed my path. They all left their mark on my memory, and guided me a bit to the music. At Berkeley I learned to fly.

Berkeley, CA sports some of the best bicycling amenities anywhere in the U.S. They are called Bicycle Boulevards - and are essentially bicycle priority streets - where thru traffic is diverted from the neighborhood and traffic calming is plenty.

Busby Berkeley outdid himself with this extravagant water production number from the 1933 movie "Footlight Parade" starring Ruby Keeler, Dick Powell, Joan Blondell and James Cagney.
The new Hays Production Code was widely ignored from 1930 to 1933, but the "nudity" in this sequence is more simulated than it is real. Nevertheless, it was a violation of the 1930 code which was eventually abandoned in 1967 in favor of the MPAA film rating system.
The extensive overhead shots are typical of those later used by MGM for Esther Williams. June Taylor dancers, eat your hearts out.

Television commercial by the pro-troop organization, Move America Forward against the Berkeley City Council.
On January 29, 2008 the Berkeley City Council passed anti-military resolutions, asking for residents to "impede" the work of recruiters and calling the Marines and their recruiting office "uninvited" and "unwelcome intruders."
Sign the petition at www.MoveAmericaForward.org and join the pushback against the anti-military Berkeley City Council.

Filmed 12 Aug 2006 at The Greek Theater in Berkeley, CA. The song was made even more special by the entrance of opening band Mates of State (Kori Gardner and Jason Hammel) to help out with the final choruses.
After hearing Death Cab play Tiny Vessels earlier in this set, I was happy to hear them follow up with Transatlanticism, as the two songs juxtapose one another so nicely. In Tiny Vessels, Ben sings about being with someone he doesn't really even care about, while in Transatlanticism, he sings about a distance between him and the object of his desire. A distance that seems insurmountable...
"those people were overjoyed; they took to their boats.
I thought it less like a lake and more like a moat.
the rhythm of my footsteps crossing flood lands
to your door have been silenced forever more.
the distance is quite simply much too far for me to row
it seems farther than ever before".
Anyone who has felt the pain of a long distance relationship can understand how he feels. And when they go into the final chorus...."I need you so much closer"....well, this song was made to be sung live....an anthemic ode to be shared with an audience. Listening to it the first time on the album, I could picture them performing this live...as the crowd swayed, sang along, and held their lighters and cell phones to the sky...
