The unedited pictures of Mr Sarkozy were clearly released by irate France 3 staff, although unions denied this. Later during Monday's broadcast interview, Mr Sarkozy laid into France Télévisions, the public broadcasting company, accusing it of trying to copy private channels instead of daring to show theatre, or more educational programmes. But detractors said he was dragging France back its post-war propaganda years.
