It is often stated that all oscillators sound alike, and that it is really difficult to discern one oscillator from another, be them analog or digital. I have received a lot of flack regarding my statement that the triangle wave on the Minimoog is special. So, as a result, I thought it might be interesting to take three of the most popular analog synthesizers and put their oscillators (and filters) to the test. And you! Can you tell which is which? Something about the source material (despite having been recorded in the same fashion as all of my videos) has resulted in the YouTube compression generating a lot of audio artifacts. No attempt I've made has resulted in a removal of this effect. Hopefully, you can listen past the effect of YouTubes compression to hear the sound of this synthesizer in these two videos! Hopefully, this problem won't exist in subsequent examples. less

Here is the video for "Damn," a song I wrote and recorded as terpsichore in the terpsichore years (1993-2000). I made the video in about 1997. It was made on a Mac Performa 6300 (100 mHz processor!) using Photoshop 4 (I think) and Avid Videoshop. The video was shot in my garage. I painstakingly cut the garage out of every single frame using the lasso in Photoshop (I didn't know how to path at that point), and rotoscoped effects by hand, frame by frame. It was a titanic effort, but not enough to make terpsichore a superstar. A testament to how much change can occur in 13 years. less
